On Thursday morning, at its headquarters in Tripoli, the Libyan Iron and Steel Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to strengthen their joint efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions in Libya.
The new partnership aims to enhance energy performance, integrate renewable energy wherever possible, and support the company’s efforts to align with international climate standards, including the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Through this initiative, UNDP will work with the company to identify opportunities for technical cooperation, institutional capacity building, and support a broader transition towards sustainable energy use in Libya’s industrial sector.
The Memorandum of Understanding also aims to contribute to achieving national climate goals and strengthening the resilience of one of Libya’s largest key industrial entities, particularly in light of energy challenges and global market pressures.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the company by its Chairman, Dr. Mohamed Abdelmalek Al-Faqih, and Ms. Sophie Kimkhadze, UNDP Resident Representative in Libya, in the presence of several officials from both parties.
Dr. Al-Faqih affirmed that the company always seeks fruitful and ongoing cooperation with UNDP to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is an important step towards achieving environmental and industrial goals and directly contributes to the sustainability of the iron and steel industry.
